About Us

The Society for the Study of Swordsmanship is a Western Martial Arts group with chapters in Sheffield, Leeds, Durham & Whitby. The Society was founded in 1998 by Mark P. Donnelly Professor at Arms. We study & practise many varieties of combat forms from Medieval to late Victorian times. These include: Rapier, Longsword, Backsword, Courtsword, Cutlass, Infantry Sabre, Single Stick & Walking stick.
We do not pursue “fencing” for sport nor do we re-enact battles or “stage” fights. We aspire to reproduce genuine swordsmanship as it was taught for self defence. If you are interested in a hobby that is a little out of the ordinary why not contact your nearest chapter. We look forward to seeing you.
